Canadian Long Haul Trucking Report

This trial proved through two independent methodologies that Nitrogen tyre inflation increased the fuel economy of the fleet. We expected to see an improvement in the 2-4% range, in-line with transport Canada’s projections attributable to correct tyre inflation. We found that these projects were correct, with our results showing a 3.3% improvement in fuel efficiency.

Larsen Trucking Inc

In November 2005, the average fleet MPG was 5.57. As of July 2007, the average fleet MPG was 7.05 – an increase of 1.48 miles per gallon travelled – a 26.6% reduction in fuel costs by inflating with Nitrogen.

Modern Tyre Dealer

Today, nearly one third of independent tyre dealers offer Nitrogen. In our “2008 Nitrogen Inflation Service Survey,” 89.2% reported they charge at least $1 per passenger tyre for the service; 80% charge $5 or more per tyre. For light truck tyres, 94% of the dealers charge at least $1 per tyre, and 80.1% charge at least $5.

Dr. Ray Bergstra, armed with his Ph.D. in chemistry, informed us that Nitrogen has slightly less mass than air. It diffuses through tyre walls more slowly because it has larger molecules.

Sperberg Nitrogen Inflation Study

In one experiment involving 54 new 10.00-20 truck tyres, 33 were inflated with Nitrogen and 21 were inflated with air. These tyres were run side by side on the same tractor units until they failed or until they wore to the tread wear indicators. In this case the 54 new truck tyres, Nitrogen inflation resulted in 26% more miles being run before tyres had to be removed when wear reached the tread wear indicators.

NASA says the space shuttle tyres don’t explode in space because they’re filled with Nitrogen, which has more stability at different altitudes and temperatures than regular air.

University of Bologna

A tyre inflated with Nitrogen loses pressure at a third of the rate of one inflated with air. Tyres inflated in this way thus require much less frequent checking and also are far less likely to be damaged by insufficient inflation – Michelin.

The absence of Oxygen in the tyre reduces the speed at which the casing material ages, with beneficial effects on the condition of the casing itself – Pirelli.

Inflation with nitrogen has numerous other advantages:
• It maintains tyre pressure better;
• It reduces aging due to casing oxidation;
• It minimises rust formation on the rim. – Goodyear.

If the Oxygen concentration inside the tyre is reduced by 6%, the life of the… car tyres (is) increased by 22%. The use of 99.9% Nitrogen increased average tyre life by 25%.

US Department of Transportation

In the 90-day static laboratory test, the inflation pressure loss for new tyres inflated with Nitrogen was approximately two-thirds of the loss rate of new tyres inflated with air. Similar differences between Nitrogen and air permeation rates in new tyres were found under dynamic, loaded laboratory roadwheel testing.
